CANNON AIR FORCE BASE —Veterans Day, as Cannon Airmen took a well-deserved day off, Ranchvale Elementary School students held a ceremony to honor America’s veterans.

Many parents of the children attended the White Table Ceremony as Rachel Wood read the story “America’s White Table”, written by Margot Theis Raven and illustrated by Mike Benny.

In the story, Kati, 10, retells the story of how her mother asked her to help set up a white table one night for a special dinner with their Uncle John. Kati’s mother explained to them the importance of the white table and the meaning of each item placed on the table to honor those veterans who gave their lives for our freedom.

Kati learns the special meaning the table has to her Uncle John, a war veteran who lost one of his fellow soldiers during the Vietnam War, as well as other veterans.

After Rachel finished reading the story, children from each grade began to set up the white table in the cafeteria.

Children from the older grades read the meaning of the items placed on the table as children from younger grades placed the items on the table and then said, “Remember” after each item was placed.

Rachel placed the last item on the table and slowly saluted in a sign of respect. Ranchvale principal, Suzanne Brockmeier, also a veteran, told the people in attendance the table would remain in the cafeteria for the rest of the year. The rendering ceremony touched many parents in the audience.
